Car insurance provides financial protection for areas other than your vehicle. There are a range of auto insurance products that may provide coverage for medical expenses should you, a passenger, pedestrian or anyone in another vehicle be injured. It’s important to have an understanding of the different types of medical coverage within auto policies when obtaining Pennsylvania car insurance quotes.

The two main auto insurance policies that offer medical coverage are bodily injury liability and medical benefits, also known as personal injury protection (PIP). Bodily injury liability comes into effect when you or a member of your family cause injury to anyone else while driving. This may be if driving your own vehicle, or another vehicle with the owner’s permission. Personal injury protection provides coverage if you or your passengers are injured in your own car. In the event of a claim, the payout may help to cover medical expenses, lost income while off work, and sometimes even funeral costs. In Pennsylvania, all drivers are required to have both bodily injury and PIP.

The other point to note is that underinsured or uninsured motorist insurance, which can provide coverage should your car be hit by a driver without adequate insurance, can also cover medical expenses if they hit you as a pedestrian.

Every policy varies so it can pay to obtain at least two Pennsylvania car insurance quotes. Always read a policy thoroughly. When uncertain of any clause, be sure to seek the advice of one of our insurance agents.
